A reason to slow down.

Some roads get you somewhere. This one gives you a reason to slow down. Following the Goulburn River north from Seymour to Shepparton, this easy Victorian road trip moves through wetlands, wine country and welcoming towns, with the river appearing and disappearing beside you like an old travelling companion.

Day 1

Morning | Begin where the river meets the rails

Start in Seymour with coffee, then stretch your legs at Australian Light Horse Memorial Park, where shady paths follow the river. Seymour’s military and railway history gives the journey its first layer of story; the water beside you sets the pace for everything that follows.

Late morning | Wine beside the water

Drive through Trawool and on to Mitchellstown. At Mitchelton, take the riverside sculpture walk before a cellar-door tasting or lunch. The estate gathers wine, art, food and landscape into one stop, while the observation tower makes the scale of the river country suddenly clear. Explore Mitchelton.

Afternoon | Lake light in Nagambie

Continue to Nagambie, where the Goulburn widens into a lake at the centre of town. Walk the boardwalk, pause at the rowing sculpture and settle in for a drink overlooking the water. Stay in Nagambie for an unhurried evening; sunset is when the lake earns its place in the itinerary.

Day 2

Heritage, produce and river red gums

Follow the river north to the historic Goulburn Weir, then continue to Murchison. Browse the town, learn about the meteorite that made Murchison famous and enjoy a picnic or gentle walk near the river. From here, the landscape opens towards Shepparton.

Afternoon | Finish at the meeting of two rivers

In Shepparton, follow the shared paths around Victoria Park Lake or join a RiverConnect walk through river red gum country. Finish at Shepparton Art Museum, where the view from the upper levels takes in the landscape you have just travelled. Explore river access and trails.

The best river journeys leave room for detours. Check opening hours, book tastings and accommodation ahead, then explore more places to eat, stay and wander across The Goulburn Region.
