Welcome to Murchison

A charming riverside town

Set on the banks of the Goulburn River, Murchison is a town where remarkable stories have unfolded for thousands of years. Long before European settlement, the Yorta Yorta people lived, travelled and cared for this Country, with the river remaining central to life, culture and connection.

The town itself was established during Victoria’s Gold Rush, becoming a bustling river crossing for prospectors travelling to the northern goldfields. Today, heritage buildings and quiet streets offer a glimpse into that pioneering past, while the river continues to shape the town’s relaxed country charm.

Murchison is also known around the world for an extraordinary event that occurred in 1969, when the Murchison Meteorite fell from the sky. Believed to be more than 4.5 billion years old, it contains some of the oldest organic material ever discovered and continues to be studied by scientists investigating the origins of our solar system-and even life itself.

Just beyond the township lies another fascinating chapter of Australia’s history. During World War II, Murchison was home to one of the country’s largest prisoner-of-war camps, housing thousands of Italian, German and Japanese prisoners. Today, the site stands as an important reminder of the region’s wartime history and cultural legacy.

Whether you’re strolling along the river, discovering stories of the Gold Rush, exploring Aboriginal heritage or standing where a meteorite changed scientific history, Murchison offers a journey through time unlike anywhere else in The Goulburn region.
