From remarkable wartime stories to thriving orchards, dairy farms and vibrant community events, Tatura offers a genuine taste of regional Victoria.
Welcome to Tatura
Tatura is a town shaped by water, resilience and community. Named from an Aboriginal word believed to mean “small lagoon”, it grew alongside the development of one of Australia’s most significant irrigation networks, transforming the Goulburn Valley into one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions.
During World War II, Tatura became home to seven internment and prisoner-of-war camps, housing thousands of civilians and prisoners from around the world. Today, this remarkable chapter of Australian history is preserved at the Tatura Irrigation and Wartime Camps Museum, where personal stories, artefacts and historical records offer a moving insight into life behind the barbed wire.
Today, Tatura is known for much more than its history. Surrounded by orchards, dairy farms and vineyards, it’s a thriving regional community where visitors can explore peaceful parks, boutique cafés, public art and a calendar of much-loved events celebrating food, agriculture and country life.
